Named in honor of West Chester-born composer Samuel Barber (1910-1981), The Samuel Barber Summer Institute offers an innovative combination of traditional academic courses and special subject seminars featuring nationally renowned leaders in 21st century music education. We offer courses in online, hybrid, and in person formats and provide students with different pricing options for graduate credit and professional development hours (ACT 48). All courses and workshops help students achieve the requirements for our NASM-accredited master's degrees in addition to meeting requirements for teacher certification renewal and professional growth programs. Master's degrees in the WCU Wells School of Music may be earned through an intensive four-summer program or a combination of regular semester and summer studies.

Some of our summer courses allows two different options for enrollment.

  • Enroll in the course to earn graduate credits and pay via tuition.
  • Earn Professional Development Hours (Act 48) by registering and paying a workshop fee.
  • Courses that offer both options for enrollment will include links to both options in the descriptions below.

How much does Graduate Tuition cost?

Tuition costs are different based on your residency. We recommend utilizing the tuition calculator on the bursars’ website for the most accurate information.

Do I need to pay tuition fees for summer courses and what do they cover?

Yes, there are tuition fees for summer courses. The tuition calculator will calculate the fees you will owe for any amount of credits. These fees cover a range of services including library circulation materials, educational equipment, and different subscriptions to various applications.

What is the difference between taking a course for a Workshop fee and for Graduate Credit?

Workshop Registration is for anyone that is looking to take the course to continue their education, but not earn graduate credit. For PA Educators, this workshop will count towards ACT 48 hours. This is offered at a lower cost since it does not include any college credits. Graduate Credit courses are for students who are part of a masters degree program at WCU, or for anyone who is looking to gain additional graduate credits. This option requires students to enroll as a graduate student at WCU. Both options cover the same material in the courses, and students have the same experience in the course.

Please note that students cannot go back after taking a course for workshop fee and request to pay the difference for graduate credit.

Can any of these summer courses count as classes for earning a teacher certification?

Since our teacher certification program is personalized for each person, we recommend you reach out to our Music Education department chair, Dr. Marci Major at with any questions!

Where can I park if my classes are in person and is there a cost for parking?

Students can park in M Lot, which is the large parking lot outside of Swope Music Building. There is no charge to park in M Lot during the summer sessions.
