WormCon: Science Starts Small
Did you know that one of the most important creatures in modern science is smaller than the dot under the question mark at the end of this sentence?
Join us Saturday, August 9th from 11AM - 4PM at West Chester University for an exciting day of discovery as we shine a light on the incredible C. elegans – a tiny roundworm that is helping to uncover some of the greatest mysteries in biology!
Whether you're a science enthusiast, a curious kid, or just looking for a fun and educational day out, this event is for you!
Registration is free, and activities will be happening throughout the day!
Why Worms?
You might not expect a worm to win a Nobel Prize—but C. elegans has been part of research that’s earned four of them! From helping scientists understand how our brains work to providing clues about aging, genetics, and disease, C. elegans has been at the heart of groundbreaking research for over 50 years.
Why do scientists all over the world love using these tiny worms? Join us to learn from scientists at WCU, UPenn, and other nearby universities about how these worms power their scientific discoveries!
What to Expect
Meet the Scientists
Chat with local researchers who use C. elegans and learn how these tiny worms are helping us explore everything from neuroscience
to developing new cures for disease.
Hands-On Activities
Try your hand at using microscopes, capture photos and make your own souvenir worm
stickers, and explore interactive demos that make science fun for all ages.
Family-Friendly Fun
Kids (and adults!) can become "worm detectives" with scavenger hunts, science crafts,
and games designed to spark curiosity and imagination.
Science Talks
Short, engaging presentations throughout the day will share the surprising ways worms
are changing the world and provide a behind-the-scenes window into how research happens.
Worm Swag
Attendees will have a chance to win fun worm-themed prizes!
Event location & Parking
WormCon will take place in WCU's Science & Engineering Commons (SECC) building, on the first floor - look for signs!
Free parking is available in K Lot behind Sykes Student Center, which is a short walk to the SECC. Alternatively, you can park in the Commons Garage beside SECC (accessed from N Campus Drive) for an hourly fee.
