Proctorio Resources for Students
Proctorio is an AI-enhanced online proctoring tool designed to support your learning and ensure a fair testing experience. It does not make automated decisions about your exam. Instead, your instructor or exam administrator will review the collected data before determining if any concerns need further attention.

What to Expect
Proctorio runs within D2L, so you will not need to create an account or log in separately.
When you begin your exam, Proctorio will run system checks to make sure your device is ready. You may also be asked to show a photo ID, such as a driver’s license, student ID, or passport. Your instructor may use Proctorio to record your video, screen, and online activity during the exam. Don’t worry–you’ll always know what’s being recorded. Only your instructor or approved school staff can view the recordings.
Proctorio does not decide whether you cheated—it simply provides data for your instructor or other approved staff to review. Once your exam is finished, you can either keep the extension installed or remove it until your next proctored exam.
Check out these resources for more information about what to expect and how to prepare for your exam:
Privacy and Security
Proctorio takes data security and privacy seriously. It uses Zero-Knowledge End-to-End Encryption, which means that only authorized staff at WCU—not Proctorio or anyone else—can access your exam data and recordings. Think of it like a locked box where only your instructor has the key. Even though Proctorio helps collect the data, it can’t see or unlock anything itself.
The Proctorio extension is only active while you’re taking a Proctorio-enabled exam, and you can remove or disable it when it’s not needed. Visit Proctorio’s Data Security webpage to learn more about their data security practices.
Proctorio complies with global and national regulations, including The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Proctorio does not collect personally identifiable information (PII) beyond what is provided by WCU or volunteered by yourself. Proctorio will never share or sell your data with other organizations or businesses; again, only WCU has access to your data. Visit Proctorio's Privacy Policy webpage to learn more.
Proctorio utilizes Microsoft Azure data centers to ensure that all exam recordings are stored in U.S.-based data centers located near our institution.
Proctorio ensures its AI systems are fair, transparent and secure with clear user guidance and feedback mechanisms. Users or anyone affected by the AI models or algorithms can submit their concerns at privacy@proctorio.com.
Accommodations
Proctorio will automatically honor any accommodations that can be set up by your professor in D2L (e.g. additional time).
If you have a disability that requires accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), please contact the Office of Educational Accessibility (OEA) to request a Letter of Accommodation (LoA). There is no deadline for disclosing to OEA or for requesting to use approved accommodations in a given course. However, accommodations can only be applied to future assignments or exams; that is, they can’t be applied retroactively. Once you receive your LoA from the OEA, be sure to share it and discuss with your professor as soon as possible.
