Supported Hardware
The information below lists the currently recommended and supported models by Information Services for Faculty and Staff only. Depending on hardware models and configerations WCU offers different levels of support.
Why do we standardize hardware?
- Vendor Knowledge - Information Services staff are very familiar and trained on both Lenovo support and hardware. Even though some companies may offer better deals on hardware at times any such savings are easily outweighed by the additional costs the University will incur with expanding extra staff time to support unfamiliar hardware.
- Imaging - Information Services uses a process called "imaging" which allows for multiple installations at one time of WCU supported software, which makes for an efficient and reliable install. In order to use this method, the hardware on which the original image is made of must match that of any machine which it is cloned too. If a machine is bought, and it does not match what which we recommend, it will have to be setup manually which can add to the time it takes to configure the machine.
- Spare Parts - Along with keeping spare parts in-house for supported machines we also are part of Lenovo's Self-Maintainer program. Belonging to the Self- Maintainer program allows for quicker access to parts in a timely manner.

Hardware Replacement
Replacement Guidelines
- The purpose of this replacement cycle is to ensure that eligible faculty and staff has a computer to use in teaching, research and administration.
- Equipment will be maintained by Information Services during its supported life.
- PC Replacement funding doesn't allow for an individual member to receive 2 systems simultaneously from the replacement fund (i.e., PC and laptop). Any additional units must be covered by departmental funds. Replacement of the additional unit is the responsibility of the department.
- The current hardware replacement cycle is between 4-5 years.
Desktop
- Desktop upgrade
- Upgrade through the replacement fund with the current standard desktop
- Retired desktop is removed
- If you have both laptop and desktop
- Replacement fund will only replace ONE system (desktop OR laptop)
- Old unit is removed
- If an individual is a new hire not replacing a current position
- The department hiring is responsible for the initial purchase
Laptop
- Laptop upgrade
- Upgrade through replacement fund with the current standard laptop
- Retired laptop is removed
- If the individual has a docking station/port replicator the fudn will pag for a replacement and retired equipment is removed
Printer
- If a printer is deemed non-repairable it is replaced with department funds
- If a printer is in need of a fuser/ maintenance kit it is charged to department funds
Monitor
- Dual monitor and any peripheral are purchased with department funds
- If an individual has dual monitors and one monitor is deemed non-repairable it is replaced with department funds
