Proctorio Resources for Faculty

Proctorio is an online proctoring service that integrates with D2L. This tool is fully automated and leverages AI technology to monitor test-takers and flag suspicious behaviors.

Key Features

  • D2L Integration: Proctorio works directly within D2L’s Quizzes tool.
  • Customizable Security: Instructors can tailor the level of monitoring and browser lockdown to fit the specific needs of an exam.
  • Recording: Proctorio supports webcam, audio, screen, and/or web traffic recording during exams.
  • Lock Down Options: Instructors can enable customizable browser-locking features that are designed to prevent students from accessing unauthorized materials, communicating with others, or capturing exam content.
  • Monitoring: Proctorio uses AI algorithms to flag suspicious behaviors, such as looking away from the screen for an extended period, the presence of another person in the room, or unusual sounds.

Technical Requirements

To run Proctorio, instructors and test-takers must use a laptop or desktop computer that has:

  • A stable internet connection.
  • A compatible web browser (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Opera, or Brave).
  • The Proctorio Browser Extension installed.

For exams that have the webcam and/or audio recording settings enabled, test-takers will also need a webcam and/or microphone.

Visit Proctorio’s Minimum System Requirements webpage for a complete list of technical requirements.

Adding Proctorio to Your D2L Course

Step 1: Decide if Online Proctoring is the Best Solution for Your Course

Before adding Proctorio to your course, please review this blog post to determine whether this is the best solution for you: Is online proctoring the best solution for my course?

Step 2: Make Sure Your Course Follows These Guidelines

  • Proctorio access will only be granted to courses in the following distance education modalities:

    • Distance Asynchronous (DA)
    • Distance Synchronous (DS)
    • Distance Majority (DM)
  • Only an exam that is worth at least 15% of the final course grade should be proctored via Proctorio.

  • Instructors must communicate the use of Proctorio to students in the syllabus.

    • Sample Proctorio Syllabus Statement

  • Instructors who have not used Proctorio at WCU before must complete a 30-minute Technology Consultation with Jessica Drass.

Step 3: Submit a Proctorio Request in ServiceNow

Each semester, you will need to submit a Proctorio Request in ServiceNow for each D2L course that you would like connected to Proctorio

  • Proctorio Requests should be submitted at least two (2) weeks prior to the desired exam date.
  • Only courses that meet the guidelines, outlined in Step 2, will be approved for connection to Proctorio.

Step 4: Confirmation and Final Setup

Once your Proctorio Request has been approved and fulfilled, you will receive an email confirmation that includes resources and step-by-step instructions for finalizing setup in your course.
