Professor Tucker's professional focus has always been community/public health nursing. She worked as a public health staff nurse for eight years at the Oakland County Health Department in Pontiac, Michigan. In that role, she visited families, served as a school nurse, managed and participated in outreach clinics, worked with community groups, taught classes for expectant parents, and was involved in many efforts to promote the health of the community. After she got a master's degree so that she could specialize in this area, she began her work at West Chester University. She teaches primarily community/public health nursing, transcultural nursing, and issues related to caring, volunteerism, and social activism. She is involved in working with La Comunidad Hispana, an agency that offers many services for Mexican immigrants, farmworkers, and other vulnerable people in Chester County. She is especially focused on working with Project Salud, the part of the agency that focuses on health. She also works to promote international partnerships with Guanajuato, Mexico, the area from which many of these immigrants come. Students have the opportunity to participate in a course that goes to this beautiful and fascinating area. She has also been involved in development of a program to provide health promotion and maintenance services to the frail elderly.
