WCU Advantage

Quality

Our nationally-ranked Master of Social Work program offers students a quality education at an exceptionally affordable rate. Within a public university renowned for its commitment to student-centered education, the MSW Program at West Chester University combines personal attention with accessibility to interdisciplinary resources.

Students are immersed in the study and practice of cutting-edge social work practice areas including social work with veterans and military families, older adults, substance use disorders, child welfare, traumatic brain injury, and community practice. Students work alongside faculty nationally reconized for their research and practice experience.

Flexibility

The MSW Program is designed to meet the needs of students, who are often working and caregiving while attending graduate school. All required MSW courses are offered during the day and evening so full-time students can complete the degree in two academic years. For students working full-time as well as attending school, there are some opportunities for employment-based field placements as well as extended field placements, working at the field site during breaks, with a reduced requirement for weekly hours. We offer students the flexibility to take courses on a part-time basis and complete the degree in three or four years.

The MSW Program also offers a 12-month Advanced Standing option to qualified applicants who have graduated within the last five years with a bachelor's degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Students may also complete the Advanced Standing program in two years on a part-time basis.

Affordability

West Chester University is a public comprehensive institution that demonstrates a long-standing commitment to public education. WCU is member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, whose purpose is "to provide high quality education at the lowest possible cost to students."

The MSW Program at West Chester University offers the highest quality education for the best value in the greater Philadelphia region. See how WCU's tuition stacks up against other local MSW programs.

Personal Attention

Students in the MSW Program enjoy intentionally small classes taught by experienced faculty. The individual attention students receive provides intensive and comprehensive training in social work practice and research, as well as professional mentoring and guidance. A number of professors have involved students in research projects and presented with students at local, regional, state, national and international professional conferences.

Commitment to Social Justice

The driving force behind West Chester's MSW Program is a strong commitment to our social work roots: community action, social justice and the enhanced well-being of vulnerable populations through meaningful and lasting social change.

Post-Graduate Employment

Brianna Carlson, MSW '11, Addictions Counselor, Malvern Institute
I graduated in May 2011 and took some time off to be with my family. I started looking for a job at the end of the summer and got a job as a clinical therapist working in inpatient drug and alcohol recovery at the Malvern Institute. With the clinical supervision I get here, I am planning on getting my clinical license, the LCSW.

Allison Murray, MSW '11, Access Center Coordinator, Child Guidance Resource Centers
I graduated in May 2011. I immediately began working as an outpatient therapist at Child Guidance Resource Centers, where I completed my second year field practicum. In September I was offered a full-time position as the Access Center Coordinator. My primary responsibility is to educate families on the mental health services CGRC offers, assess the appropriate referral type, and to help them get started in services.

Jocelyn Spencer Sagrati, MSW '11, Trauma Therapist, Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, Inc.
Upon graduation, I joined the team of trauma therapists at Survivors of Abuse in Recovery, Inc. in Wilmington, Del. I currently provide individual and group counseling to survivors of sexual abuse and recently earned my trauma-sensitive yoga teacher certification. This winter I participated in a trauma-informed probation initiative intended to divert women with a history of sexual trauma and prostitution from life on the streets.

Danielle Di Natale, MSW '09, School Social Worker, Berks County school district
I graduated in May 2009 and began working as a behavioral specialist consultant/mobile therapist while I got my Home and School Visitor's certification. After that, I worked as a clinical therapist in a facility for adjudicated males. In 2011, I got my dream job as a school social worker in Berks County, where I provide ongoing support to special education students through individual and group work. Returning back to school and earning my MSW has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made!

Theresa Gill, MSW '09, Associate Director of Community Outreach, Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support, Saint Joseph's University
In May 2009 I began working for Catapult Learning doing individual, group, and family counseling as well as consultation for outside resources. In July 2011, I began working at the Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support at Saint Joseph's University. For my first project, I coordinated a volunteer program for high school students to participate in our social skills program as neurotypical models of age-appropriate social behaviors for learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Teresa Whetstone, MSW '09, Social Worker, Veterans Association of Philadelphia
I graduated in 2009 with field practicum experience in the School District of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia VA. Following graduation, I was selected for the prestigious Psychosocial Rehabilitation & Recovery fellowship program through the Department of Veterans Affairs, whose mission is to "develop future mental health leaders with vision, knowledge, and commitment to transform mental health care systems in the 21st century."" Combined with my MSW training at West Chester University, this fellowship allowed me to pursue my passion of working with veterans. Today I am working at the Philadelphia VA as a social worker in the HUD/VASH (Housing Urban Development/Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing) program finding housing for homeless veterans.

Felicia Brackin, MSW '12, Social Worker, Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
I chose the WCU MSW program because of the broad approach that it offered. I graduated from the program in 2012 and I'm currently working at Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children on an inpatient, general pediatrics floor. I completed my second year internship at Nemours and was hired for a full-time position just before graduation. At Nemours, I get the opportunity to work with children and their families in many different ways, which keeps things interesting. The WCU program provided an incredibly encouraging and supportive setting to trial out the vast opportunities that social work has to offer. It also provided an arena to take risks and challenge myself. I'm glad to have had this experience.

Ray Facundo, MSW '13, Coordinator of Student Veteran Services, Portland State University
After six years in the United States Army, including two tours in Iraq, I had the opportunity to utilize the post- 9/11 GI Bill and obtain an MSW degree at WCU. I worked closely with WCU's Office of Veterans Affairs observing how the office functioned and serve the needs of the University's veterans. My field placement and research project on veteran transitions to civilian life laid the groundwork for me to become the first coordinator of Student Veteran Services at Portland State University. I currently provide services to more than 1,400 student veterans. Portland State hired me two weeks prior to graduating from WCU.
