Gerontology

Much of Dr. Lavery’s research focuses on the needs of older adults. She is particularly interested in the housing needs of older adults with low incomes, elder abuse and neglect, loss and animal assisted interventions.

Publications

Thanatology

One of Dr. Lavery’s areas of interest is thanatology, which is the study of death, dying, grief and bereavement. Her practice experience includes hospice social work and bereavement care. She has facilitated caregiver and grief support groups in senior centers and hospices. Another area of interest of includes older adults and disenfranchised loss and grief. She was certified in thanatology through the Association of Death Education and Counseling in 2008 and became a Fellow in Thanatology in 2015.
