About Us

Mission Statement and Goals

The Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact promotes community-based learning experiences that address issues of public concern by building mutually beneficial partnerships and empowering students to be active citizens in their local, national and global communities.

To achieve this mission, the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact:

  • Partners with a wide array of non-profit and governmental agencies, faculty, staff, and student clubs, organizations, and athletic teams
  • Facilitates academic and co-curricular community service and service-learning programs that engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members
  • Disseminates information about service-learning, resources, and professional development opportunities
  • Consults with faculty to incorporate service-learning opportunities into specific courses and programs of study
  • Collaborates with all parties to ensure quality learning experiences and positive impact in the community
  • Manages service-learning data and facilitates assessment

Seth Jacobson Senior Director of Serving Learning and Volunteeer Programs

Seth Jacobson, Ph.D.

Director, Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact

Seth joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in February of 2020. Seth brings more than ten years of progressively responsible experience to his role, working at the intersections of education and public service. He joined West Chester following appointments with Governor Tom Wolf's administration as Special Advisor for Postsecondary and Higher Education and Deputy Policy Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Prior to his tenure in state government, Seth served as the Assistant Director for the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement at Drexel University, where he also earned a Master's degree in Comparative and International Education and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy. Seth is deeply committed to advancing the public good outcomes of higher education, and in particular, West Chester University's mission to graduate students that contribute to the common good.

Ella Guimond, MSW

Associate Director, Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact

Ella joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August 2021. Before joining WCU, Ella worked as a Community Engagement Manager for Catholic Relief Services (CRS) where she mobilized local communities to advocate for changes to U.S. foreign policy that promote justice and reduce poverty overseas. Prior to CRS, Ella worked as the Service-Learning Placement Coordinator for the Faith-Justice Institute at Saint Joseph's University, where she promoted academic service-learning experiences with community-based organizations throughout Philadelphia and New Jersey. Ella also spent a year working and living in El Salvador, Central America, working for the Casa de la Solidaridad study abroad program. Ella has her Master of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania and her Bachelor of Arts in Ethnic Studies with minors in Spanish and Peace and Justice Studies from the University of San Diego. Ella is passionate about creating meaningful experiences for students to engage in experiential learning opportunities that challenge them to think critically and take action.

Assistant Director, Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact

Kaileik joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August of 2021. Kaileik's experience is in equity, diversity, inclusion and youth/student leadership development in Higher Education and Public Health. She received a B.S. in Marketing and Business Administration from Chestnut Hill College, and an M.S in Higher Education and Student Affairs from West Chester University. She has the desire to impact social change concerning the inequities that effect underserved and historically excluded communities on a local, national, and global scope by using personal testimony, theory, and practice to inform her work. Kaileik joins the Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact team to fight for social justice, increase equity and most importantly empower our students to become transformative change agents and to reach their definitions of success.

Alondra Martinez

Administrative Assistant, Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact

Alondra joined the Center for Civic Engagement and Social Impact in November of 2021. She graduated from West Chester University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies and three minors in the Department of Languages and Cultures with concentrations in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and Chinese language. She comes from a Latinx background and is a First Generation American and college graduate. Alondra previously worked in the WCU Facilities Division before moving to the Division of Student Affairs. She is looking forward to supporting the West Chester University community with persistence and professionalism.

Linda Stevenson, Ph.D.

Faculty Associate for Service Learning for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021

Linda Stevenson is the Faculty Associate for Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021. She brings an international and Latinx orientation with her from the Department of Political Science International Affairs program, where she joined the faculty in 2002, and as a leader in the WCU Global Studies, Latin American and Latino/a Studies, and Ethnic Studies Minor programs. Dr. Stevenson offers Service Learning opportunities in her Latin American Culture and Politics, Latino Politics, and Women and Politics courses, working with community partners across the region from Harrisburg to New Jersey, and internationally in the Latin American region. She seeks to enhance connections between WCU faculty, students and community partners in ongoing, as well as new, innovative ways.

Katie joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August 2020 as a Graduate Assistant for Community Partnerships. Katie graduated from McGill University in 2018 with a degree in Environmental Economics and a minor in Urban Systems. She is pursuing a Master's Degree in WCU's Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs program. Katie is passionate about developing inclusive and comprehensive programming and excited to help students and the communities they live in develop a strong and mutually beneficial relationship.

Chyna joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August 2020 as a Graduate Assistant for the Resource Pantry. She is a proud WCU Alumni and graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. Currently, she is pursuing a Master's Degree in WCU's Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs program. She is excited to be a part of the team and is excited to offer her support and assistance to students experiencing food and basic needs insecurity.

Nick Marcil

Nick joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August 2020 as a Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement. Nick is a proud WCU alum, where he graduated in 2020 with a B.S.Ed. in Early Grades Preparation (PK-4) and a Minor in Mathematics Education (PK-8). Currently, he is pursuing a Master's Degree in WCU's Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs program. Nick is excited to be working with students to foster their leadership skills and is enthusiastic to be helping students create social change throughout their communities!

Skylar Kelly

Skylar is a Graduate Assistant serving as the Resource Pantry Operations Manager. She is a student in the Higher Education Policy and Student Affairs Program here at West Chester University. Skylar graduated from Kutztown University in 2018 and then went on to work for a youth mentoring non-profit called Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence for 2 years. She currently also works part time at Davita Kidney Care. Skylar is from West Chester PA and is excited to be working at the Resource Pantry.

Mallory Swyers

Mallory joined the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact in August of 2021 as an Intern from the Graduate Social Work Program. Her internship is dedicated to the development of a Benefits Hub that will be incorporated into the services offered through the Resource Pantry. Mallory graduated from Shippensburg in 2019 with a Bachelors in Social Work and a minor in Gerontology. Mallory is currently pursuing her Master's Degree in Social Work from WCU. Mallory is excited to be working with the Center to help develop their new Benefits Hub to provide students with more holistic support for their various needs.

Annual Report

The annual report aims to provide a summary of both the department-led efforts, as well as community engagement initiatives reported to the department by faculty, staff, and students. Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact promotes community engaged learning experiences that address critical community needs by building mutually beneficial partnerships with non-profit organizations and governmental agencies, while empowering students to be active citizens in their local, national and global communities.
