Listen to Others — Why and How to Make Connections:

  • I've had a pretty good success rate in making connections. I've had professionals respond to me when I didn't expect them to...They'd say, “my number, call me whenever.” Another gave me a ton of materials, a ton of advice. So, I think, leveraging the fact that you're a young college student, and you're hungry and motivated. And this is something you really love. I think 99% of people are gonna give you the time of day.

  • I guess you could call it a little bit of luck, a little bit of destiny, persistence for sure. I've got on the phone with probably like a hundred people before, but it only takes one. I talked to the WCU alumni who introduced me to the internship opportunity. I found him through LinkedIn, filtered through past school and the industry of investment banking and luckily he got back to me.

  • A connection can help open doors or offer insight into the company culture, but ultimately, it’s the candidate’s qualifications and fit for the role that matter most. Networking can be valuable, but it’s not a substitute for strong skills and a good interview.
