Social Work Concepts Minor

Program Curriculum Statement

The Minor in Social Work Concepts explores foundations of social services across allied helping professionals and focuses on topics such as human rights, ethics, social justice, and race relations. With four required courses and several social work electives to choose from, this 18-credit minor provides students with important information about the values, knowledge, and skills that are integral to helping professions. Students can pair this coursework with a variety of other majors and minors to bring social service and social justice insights to a variety of fields (e.g., Mental Health Counseling, Teaching, Youth Development, Political Science, Public Health, Criminal Justice, etc.). With professions of all kinds recognizing the importance of valuing diversity, increasing equitable representation, and combatting social injustices, the Minor in Social Work Concepts prepares students to take on educational roles (e.g., policy advisor, advocate, coach, facilitator, presenter) in many different occupational and community settings. Students declaring this minor must be in good academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0) to enroll in the program. Students must consult the minor's Departmental Advisor and Coordinator for elective selection and advising.
