Non–Literacy
Graduate Students
Literacy graduate courses emphasize the importance of assessing students’ literacy strengths and needs. As a graduate student in a non–Literacy program, you will gain expertise in developing and implementing successful literacy and language interventions for students needing extra support in strengthening their reading skills.
Literacy graduate courses will enhance your graduate work by teaching you the development of language competencies: writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visual representation, as well as:
- how to design appropriate literacy instruction
- comprehension
- how to help learners develop 21st Century literacy skills
- word–level knowledge
- major theories of language and literacy
- content area literacy for students with disabilities
- response to intervention
- literacy acquisition and development for students with disabilities
- fluency
- literacy instruction in children’s literature
- vocabulary development
- how to honor learners’ multicultural diversity
- the link between language, learning, and literacy
