PAWLP offers effective Professional Development. We have consultants who specialize in all aspects of teaching writing and reading across the content areas.

Consulting Opportunities

We have consultants who specialize in all aspects of teaching writing, including best-practice strategies; writing in the content areas; writing assessment at the classroom, grade, and district level; writing program and curriculum development. We also specialize in writing-reading connections across the grades and across the curriculum. Our newest program, Mind the Gap, focuses on literacy strategies to close the achievement gap.

Description: Consultation can take whatever form a district desires. We work with administrators at the central office or building level and/or with district, grade-level, or building curriculum teams comprised of administrators, teachers, and/or parents. There is no charge for initial meetings.

Professional Development Seminars

PAWLP offers a variety of different seminars:

• Strategies for Teaching Writing in the Six Traits and Domains
• Writing Assessment
• Grammar Matters
• Writing and/or Reading in the Content Areas, K-12
• Reading and Writing in Digital Spaces
• Reading in the Secondary English Classroom

These Seminars are available on site in school districts in after-school sessions, on weekends, or during the summer. Number of sessions depends on kind and amount of credit to be awarded. To learn more please download the complete list of Professional Development Seminars.

Graduate Certificates

Graduate Certificate courses are offered on campus or in school districts during the school year, and at the Graduate Business Center and the Bucks County Intermediate Unit during the summer. Only two courses are required. The other three are electives that meet the specific needs of the educator. They can include inquiry projects and independent study developed by participants in conjunction with faculty members.

Certificate in Teaching Writing

A fifteen-credit graduate certificate designed for teachers who want to attain specialized knowledge in the teaching of writing. Particularly useful for:

1. Elementary teachers and Reading specialists whose preparation emphasized Reading but whose professional responsibilities include teaching writing and preparing students for the PSSA Writing Assessment;
2. Secondary English teachers whose preparation emphasized Literature but whose professional responsibilities include teaching writing in a variety of modes and genres to prepare students for the PSSA; and
3. Literacy coaches who feel unprepared for the writing aspect of that position.

Certificate in Teaching Writing, Reading and Literature
