The Department of Special Education offers teacher preparation (grades preK-8, 7-12) programs at the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate course levels, with degrees conferred at the undergraduate (BSEd) and graduate (MEd) levels. We also provide opportunities for advanced study in special education including Universal Design for Learning, assistive technology, and autism education.

As a candidate in a WCU special education program, you will have many opportunities for engagement with learners with exceptionalities. We offer a variety of field experience courses, student clubs/organizations, and community engagement options. You will have experiences working in local prek-12 special education settings and may work in Philadelphia, Upper Darby, and educational settings abroad.

Online Programs

Special Education M.Ed. Online Program (33 credits)

West Chester University's Special Education Department offers a fully online program leading to the Master of Education in Special Education. The program is open to anyone with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited 4 year degree granting institution with a final GPA of 3.0 or higher. Read More.

Post-Baccalaureate Certification in Special Education (Online, Blended, & Traditional)

The Post-Baccalaureate Certification in Special Education is open to any candidate with a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with an expressed interest in working with children with disabilities. Read More.

Graduate Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Universal Design for Learning and Assistive Technology (18 credits)

The Certificate in Universal Design for Learning and Assistive Technologies provides professionals, parents, and other community members instruction and training in assessment, pedagogy, and technology that support students that relay on UDL and AT for learning. Read More.

Certificate of Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders (18 credits)

The Certificate of Specialization in Autism Spectrum Disorders is geared towards community members who currently work with, or will work with, individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Read More.
