OFF-CAMPUS Credits

New Students

Students applying to WCU having previously taken college coursework at other institutions (including dual-enrollment), must request that official transcripts be sent to West Chester University. The transcripts will then be evaluated by the Registrar’s Office, and prospective students will be notified of the results through their WCU email.

Current WCU Students

Official transcripts or test score reports must be sent to WCU directly from the prior school or testing agency for evaluation of credit.

For fastest evaluation, we prefer electronic transcripts when available.

  • Electronically: transfercredits@wcupa.edu or search for "West Chester University" as a receiving institution
  • By Mail: 25 University Avenue, West Chester, PA 19383

Once we receive your transcript, the incoming courses will be evaluated and the transfer credit will be applied to your record, this process may take up to 2 weeks.

To view your transfer credits, log into your RamPortal account and click on the Transcript Credit Summary Card or your Unofficial Transcript.

Transfer Credit Types

There are benefits to taking classes at another University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE).

As a WCU student, you can register as a PASSHE visiting student and it will permit courses to be transferred across the System without loss of institutional residency, eligibility for honors or athletics, or credit towards graduation at WCU!

Students should review the current process for registering for (and transferring back) a course at another PASSHE institution.

West Chester University students may take courses off campus and transfer the credit toward their degree. All students are required to submit a completed Transfer Credit Permission form to the Office of the Registrar prior to taking any courses off campus.  If the course does not have an established equivalency, it is the student's responsibility to have the chair of the West Chester University department that offers the course determine an equivalency prior to registering for the course.

Students should review the current transfer policies including how courses may (or may not) apply to specific requirements and how repeated courses may apply to their academic record.

Information about the exciting opportunities to study abroad while at West Chester University can be found with the Global Engagement Office. It is important to know that credits earned while abroad are considered "transfer credits", do not count towards your WCU residency requirement or GPA, and must be evaluated by West Chester University upon completion before credit is awarded.

Students must have coursework pre-approved on the International Study Approval Form to make sure it will apply to their degree plans.

Financial Aid may be available, reach out to the Financial Aid Office with questions.

WCU offers Prior Learning Assessment (or PLA) to students who demonstrate that what they already know is equivalent to what they would have learned in a particular course. This knowledge could have been acquired through past work, training programs, volunteer service, cultural or artistic pursuits, hobbies and recreational pastimes, community or religious activities, organizational membership, adult education, noncredit courses, military training not evaluated for credit by ACE, or other experiences.

Students who think PLA might be an option for them, should  obtain a syllabus, containing the learning goals, for the identified WCU course or courses. The portfolio should clearly describe how the student’s learning satisfies the identified course(s) competencies/learning goals.  Students should be prepared to provide supporting documentation, such as: course descriptions, certificates from training courses, job description, sample work, etc.  Student's portfolios will be reviewed by the department chair of the department the student is seeking credit for.
